Trenholm Little League Blue All Stars Win Again in Pomaria

TLL Blue All Stars - 2018 South Carolina Little League District 3 Minors All Stars Champions

The Trenholm Little League Blue Minors All Stars won the 2018 South Carolina Little League District 3 8-9-10/Minors All Stars Tournament, which was held June 21-26 in Pomaria, South Carolina.  The TLL Blue Minors All Stars went undefeated in the tournament, going 3-0 to take home the banner!

Trenholm Little League had two teams in the tournament, as the Trenholm Little League Red Minors All Stars also played in the tournament.

On Thursday, June 21, the TLL Blue All Stars started the tournament against the Irmo Little League Gold Minors All Stars. Irmo Gold went out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning only to see TLL Blue tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  After holding Irmo Gold scoreless in the top of the second inning, TLL Blue again scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Irmo Gold would rally for three runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game at six.  But TLL Blue would score a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-6 lead.  After a lightning delay, TLL Blue would again add another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an 8-6 lead heading to the top of the sixth and final inning.

Irmo Gold's leadoff hitter would hit a double into the right center field gap.  But the TLL Blue defense would throw the runner out trying to stretch the hit to a triple for the first out.  Irmo Gold would have several good at bats after that, including a couple of two strike hits to cut the deficit to one run.

With two outs, Irmo Gold had the bases loaded with the tying run on third base and the go ahead run on second base.   Their batter hit a ground ball into the hole on the right side of the infield.  The TLL Blue first baseman went for the ball, but it was too far to his right.  However, the TLL Blue second baseman fielded the ball cleanly and immediately ran to first base, knowing the first baseman could not get back to the bag.  The TLL Blue second baseman slid feet first into the base, touching the base before the Irmo Gold batter touched it for the third out.  TLL Blue would win the game 8-7!

2018 Trenholm Blue and Trenholm Red Minors All Stars

On Friday, June 23, the Trenholm Blue All Stars took on the Trenholm Red All Stars in a winner's bracket game.  Both teams would get together in the outfield before the game for an all Trenholm Little League team picture!  In the top of the first inning, Trenholm Red took a 2-0 lead on a two run double by their catcher.

But Trenholm Blue would rally back.  They scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-2 lead.  After holding TLL Red scoreless in the top of the second inning, TLL Blue added two runs before rain suspended play with TLL Blue leading 6-2 with runners on second and third with one out.

The game resumed Saturday morning and TLL Blue would add another eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 14-2.  TLL Blue would go on to win the game 16-2.

On Sunday, June 24, both Trenholm Blue and Trenholm Red were in action.  Trenholm Red would be defeated by Irmo Gold in an elimination game, ending the Trenholm Red All Stars season.  Trenholm Blue would take on the Mid Carolina All Stars for the District 3 Championship.

Trenholm Blue wasted no time in the top of the first inning as they scored three runs.  In the bottom of the first inning, TLL Blue held Mid Carolina scoreless and the score was 3-0 after one inning.  After both teams held each other scoreless in the second inning, TLL Blue would add a run to make the score 4-0. Mid Carolina would get that run back in the bottom of the third inning and the score was 4-1 after three innings.

In the top of the fourth inning, TLL Blue would extend their lead.  They scored three runs to take a 7-1 lead.  And thanks to strong starting pitching and solid defense, TLL Blue would hold Mid Carolina scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning.   After holding TLL Blue scoreless in the top of the fifth inning, Mid Carolina chipped away at the lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 7-3.

Mid Carolina held TLL Blue scoreless in the top of the sixth inning. But TLL Blue's trademark solid defense, which they had all tournament long,  came through again in the bottom of the sixth inning.   TLL Blue would turn its second double play of the contest, which ended the game.  TLL Blue would win the game and the championship 7-3!

It was a terrific performance by the TLL Blue All Stars.  They outscored their opponents 31-12 in the three victories.  With the win, Trenholm Little League gained their third South Carolina Little League District 3 Championship for the 2018 season.  The TLL Blue Coach Pitch All Stars won the 2018 South Carolina Little League District 3 Coach Pitch Baseball Championship and the TLL Red Coach Pitch Softball All Stars are the 2018 South Carolina Little League District 3 Coach Pitch Softball Champions!

It's also the second time in three years that the TLL Blue All Stars won the South Carolina District 3 8-9-10/Minors Championship in Pomaria.  Two years ago, the Trenholm Little League Blue Minors All Stars won the Little League District 3 8-9-10/Minors All Stars Tournament in Pomaria, going 4-0 and outscoring their opponents 52-14 in the four games.

The Trenholm Blue Minors All Stars will represent District 3, along with Irmo Gold, who finished as the District 3 Runner-Up, at the South Carolina Little League State 8-9-10/Minors All Stars Tournament in Laurens, South Carolina starting on Friday, July 6.  The TLL Blue All Stars will play the Greenville Little League All Stars, the runner-up team in District 7, in a first round game at 8 pm.
